biolum's bio:
Long Bio
Art making has been a life long passion and I can't imagine doing anything else. I found my way to glass as an art medium by taking a high school art class where I learned to make stained glass windows and boxes. Since then glass has been my addiction. For me, the thrill of glass is not only the beauty of colors combining in light, or composing unexpected designs but the many forms glass can take when hot or cold. I experiment continually with my heat worked glass, stained glass and mosaic, mixing or combining all three techniques to make something unexpected, fresh and beautiful.
I completed my BFA in Photography at California College of the Arts in Oakland California in 1998 but I quickly returned my focus to glass using my new appreciation for color and composition. In addition to developing a body of work of my own, I've fabricated numerous stained glass panels and mosaic installations of my own design in the last 15 years, including commissioned work ranging from windows for private residences and kitchen backsplashes to large scale architectural installations.
The inspiration for my glass work comes from images and imaginings from the deep sea and outer space. Alien forms and undiscovered creatures in the primeval ocean were first evoked in my jewelry designs and continue to inspire many of my designs for stained glass panels and fused tile lighting.
biolum glass is the studio name for my collection of designs in stained glass, mosaics, lighting and fused glass jewelry.
Where did the name “biolum” come from?
"Biolum" is the first part of the word bioluminescent, which refers to plants and animals that can produce light from within their bodies. Many creatures living in the abyss of the deep ocean glow with a light that is soft and electric blue, sparkling and winking like a distant galaxy. When in the studio I draw on this inspiration and strive to create contemporary, functional art glass objects that are colorful and unexpected, innovative glass art and artifacts from the future for modern day living.
